The novel centres around an old man, Magnus Tait who was implicated in the disappearance of a young girl some years ago.
Seemingly strangled by the vivid red scarf that she wore the locals are very keen to land the blame at the door of elderly simpleton, Magnus Tait, a man who to all intents and purposes has been ostracised by the residents of Ravenswick. I did not enjoy this as much as I hoped.
The novel started very well, I enjoyed the different POV and the sense of place was well presented by the different characters. Once living in the home that Catherine and her father now occupy, Catriona was never found and her fate to this day remains shrouded in mystery.
The author was able to convey the isolation and the intricacies of a closely knit community. While the Vera series in set in Northumberland, this series is set on the Shetland Isles. The girls have both taken up with Geordie lads. Murder in an isolated Shetland Island community, with an atmospheric feel of cold and claustrophobia.
The bare, brooding atmosphere of the Shetland islands, the sharply drawn characters, the masterly laying of clues and red herrings, and a warm and sympathetic protagonist in Jimmy Perez all contributed to a very enjoyable few hours of reading. He grew up on the neighbouring Fair Isle and is familiar with the locals and the way of life. I liked 4 stars This is my first Ann Cleeves book and I will definitely read more. I liked the village life.

Cleeves takes ingredients that have been familiar to generations of crime readers but uses them in a way that makes them fresh and engaging. Never mind the murders; her study of a forgotten soul waiting for someone to come to his door and wish him a happy new year is enough to freeze the blood.
